What is Silica Dust?

Silica is a naturally occurring mineral found in many construction materials, including:

• Stone
• Concrete
• Brick
• Mortar
• Tiles
• Sand
• Quartz worktops

When these materials are cut, drilled, chased, ground or demolished, fine dust particles are released into the air. The most dangerous particles are often invisible to the naked eye and can be breathed deep into the lungs.

Why is Silica Dust Dangerous?

Repeated exposure to respirable crystalline silica can lead to serious and irreversible health conditions, including:

Silicosis

A permanent lung disease caused by inhaling silica dust. The lungs become scarred, making breathing increasingly difficult.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

Long-term lung damage leading to breathlessness and reduced quality of life.

Lung Cancer

Respirable crystalline silica is classified as a carcinogen and prolonged exposure can significantly increase the risk of developing lung cancer.

Kidney Disease

Studies have also linked silica exposure with chronic kidney disease and other health complications.

The effects may take years to develop, meaning workers can feel healthy today while unknowingly damaging their lungs.

Common Construction Activities That Generate Silica Dust

High-risk tasks include:

• Disc cutting concrete or brick
• Floor grinding
• Chasing walls
• Demolition works
• Concrete breaking
• Stone fabrication and polishing
• Cutting paving slabs
• Roadworks and utility excavations
• Dry sweeping construction dust

The Hierarchy of Control

Employers have a legal duty under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations to prevent or adequately control exposure.

1. Eliminate the Dust

Where possible:

• Use pre-cut materials
• Order products to size
• Use alternative materials containing less silica

2. Use Water Suppression

Water is one of the most effective controls for silica dust.
Benefits include:

• Prevents dust becoming airborne
• Reduces exposure at source
• Improves visibility during cutting operations

Examples:

• Wet cutting saws
• Water-fed disc cutters
• Wet polishing systems
• Road cutting equipment with integrated water suppression

3. Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV)

LEV systems capture dust before it reaches the breathing zone.

Examples include:

• Extraction booths
• Integrated machine extraction
• Dust capture hoods
• Fixed extraction systems

Regular examination and testing of LEV systems is essential to ensure they remain effective.

4. Use Suitable Vacuum Systems

Not all vacuum cleaners are suitable for silica dust.

Construction activities should generally use:

• M-Class vacuums as a minimum
• H-Class vacuums where higher risks exist

Domestic vacuum cleaners should never be used to collect silica dust.

5. Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE)

RPE should be considered the last line of defence.

Suitable equipment may include:

• FFP3 disposable masks
• Half-face respirators fitted with P3 filters
• Powered respirators for high-exposure activities

RPE must:

• Be face-fit tested
• Be maintained
• Be suitable for the task
• Be worn correctly

Housekeeping Matters

One of the biggest mistakes seen on construction sites is poor housekeeping.

Avoid:

  • Dry sweeping
  • Using compressed air to clean surfaces
  • Allowing dust accumulations to build up

Instead:

✔ Vacuum using M-Class equipment
✔ Wet clean where possible
✔ Remove waste regularly

Health Surveillance

Workers regularly exposed to silica dust may require health surveillance.

This can include:

• Respiratory questionnaires
• Lung function testing
• Occupational health reviews

Health surveillance helps identify early signs of ill health before conditions become severe.

Legal Requirements

Relevant legislation includes:

• Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002
• Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974
• Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999

Employers must:

• Assess the risks
• Implement suitable controls
• Provide information, instruction and training
• Monitor exposure where necessary
• Maintain control measures
